ABN registration FAQs

Who needs an ABN?

Anyone running a business or enterprise in Australia, such as sole traders, contractors and freelancers. Employees do not need one. You must be entitled to an ABN — see the ABR entitlement rules.

Do I need a TFN first?

Individuals usually provide their TFN when applying for an ABN as a sole trader. If you don’t have one yet, start with our TFN application.

How long does it take?

If all the information is correct, many applications get an outcome as soon as they are submitted. Some are reviewed, which can take up to 20 business days.

Is registering an ABN free?

Yes, registering through the Australian Business Register is free. Our service fee (99–199 AUD) covers our help preparing and checking your application.

Do I need to register for GST too?

Only if your business turnover is (or will be) $75,000 or more a year, or if you provide taxi or ride-sourcing services. Otherwise it’s optional.
