A Tax File Number is a nine-digit number — often written in groups of three, like 123 456 789. Older TFNs may have eight digits. There is no TFN card or certificate: the ATO sends you a letter with your number.

Is it the same for visa holders?

Yes. International students, working holiday makers and temporary residents get exactly the same nine-digit format as Australian citizens. The number stays yours for life, even if you leave Australia and return years later.

How to keep it safe

  • Only share it with your employer, bank, super fund, the ATO or a registered tax agent.
  • Don't send it by text, social media or unencrypted email.
  • Don't keep a photo of your TFN letter on your phone without protection.
  • If you think it's been misused, contact the ATO immediately.
