If you're studying in Australia and want to work part-time, you need a Tax File Number. It's free, you apply with the ATO, and you keep it for life.

Check your work rights first

Most student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session, and without that limit during scheduled course breaks. Check your own conditions on VEVO. If your visa has a "no work" condition, you can't use the online TFN application.

What you need

  • Your passport, with your student visa linked to it
  • To be in Australia when you apply
  • An Australian postal address (your TFN is sent there)
  • An email address and phone number

How to apply

  1. Go to the ATO's online TFN application for foreign passport holders.
  2. Enter your details exactly as on your passport — including all given names.
  3. Give your Australian postal address.
  4. Submit, note your receipt number and allow up to 28 days.

Mistakes we see most often

  • Leaving out a middle name, or swapping given names and family name
  • A typo in the passport number
  • Using a temporary address you'll have left before the letter arrives
  • Applying a second time while the first is being processed

When your TFN arrives

  • Give it to your employer on the TFN declaration.
  • Give it to your bank so interest isn't taxed at the highest rate.
  • Make sure your super fund has it.
  • Lodge a tax return after 30 June — you may get a refund. Try our tax refund calculator.

Need an ABN too?

Only if you work as a contractor or freelancer rather than an employee. See Is an ABN the same as a TFN?.

Applying with the ATO is free. If you'd like us to prepare and check your application, see our TFN application service (99–199 AUD). City guides: Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Hobart, Darwin.
